Equipment that works for R/C Combat

Cheaper AND Safer than AMA's Rules!

Here in Billings, Montana we have a very active club with plenty of hot pilots. We also have a field elevation of approx. 3500 asl. The first year (1995) that we tried combat there were a lot of crashes and the planes that flew were marginal at best. So, we made a few changes to the AMA 704 rules to make the event more practical for those of us who don't live at sea level. Now we have very few crashes on launch and the cost is lower. Here are the important considerations:

Wing Area  The very small models, such as the HOB .15-sized Mustang and 109, are VERY hard to fly. With standard servos and pack theyt are extremely heavy and almost impossible to launch. The larger planes, such as the Progressive kits or the .25 sized HOB Mustang, can actually fly well with standard servos.
Engine The .15's are too small for positive launch. I understand the reason (safety) but it's WRONG - an underpowered model going out of control is FAR more dangerous than an adequately powered aircraft that launches with authority. So we allow .25's with standard muffler. The engines cost the same and fly the planes much better.
Radio With the larger planes and .25 engines, it's possible to use standard servos and pack. Better performance is available with a small (250 mah) pack, and a micro servo on throttle also helps. But these are expensive items - most use std servos and a small pack. Std servos are better for aileron and elevator for power.
Landing Gear Another thing we hated was the constant repairs and prop changes from no gear. IF you fly from pavement put light wheels and light gear on your plane. This is SO much nicer! Again, lighter battery and servos help offset the gear weight.
Performance You CAN have too much speed. It's no score if your streamer breaks! Plus, you'll overshoot your target and probably not be able to turn with a slower plane of equal wing loading. Prop for CLIMB, this makes launches much safer.
