How
To Be
An ACE!
Tactics for R/C Combat
|
by Eric Hawkinson -- 1996 Montana State R/C Combat Champion
There seems to be a real lack of information
concerning flying techniques and tactics for RC Combat. Since flying IS
the difference between winning and losing, I'm going to try over the next
month to get some good tactical advice on the pages for wannabe combat Aces.
I have 26 kills in 34 missions since fall of 1995, in case you wonder what
my qualifications are.
Favorite Offensive Move
|
My favorite tactic to get a kill is to follow a plane
to the edge of the box from slightly above; I bank slightly in the direction
opposite what I expect him to turn - if he's watching he'll relax and turn
the other way. Then I pull a hard diving turn down on his streamer. If he
dives I pull harder, if he climbs I bank steeper. The movie
of the Wally cut shows this tactic in action. (Sorry Wally!) |
Favorite Defensive Move
|
If someone is on my tail, I will usually bank in the
direction that seems obvious - if I'm close in I'll bank out, if I'm out
I'll bank towards the flight line. I start the bank slowly so the chasing
pilot can see it, then I just continue rolling thru inverted and pull elevator
at about 270 degrees of roll, meaning I'm probably done turning around by
the bogey realizes I went the other way. |
Vertical Maneuvers
|
The Immelman is still a good tactic, but don't recover
in a straight line - over-roll or under-roll at the top so your heading
is not obvious. If a target loops, reduce power slightly and pull a hard
turn to come out on his tail. Depth perception is inadequate to get a kill
chasing some clown around in loops. If he continues to loop, go out and
try for a dive IN at him as he exits the loop. |
