Subject: 1/12 SCALE HAWKER TEMPESTS Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 19:26:20 -0500 (EST) From: ADani60140@aol.com To: DBEST@wtp.net I came across your homepage, and could not help but think of a model that I designed. It is a 1/12 Scale Hawker Tempest MkV. It has a 41" span, and mine weighs 2.9 lbs with four FP 148 servos, a full size battery pack, an FP .20, film camo covering, and a 2 oz heavy hub. It flies quite well in this configuration, and has been mistaken for a 1/6 -1/7 scale model when in the air. It is very fast with the .20, and would be an absolute rocket ship with an FX .25, or simliar hot .25. I do not have gear on it but that doesn't matter much. The large chin scoop (which contains the battery pack) is reinforced with fiberglass, and the propeller's arc only extends 1/8" past this point. It can actually take off from the grass like this!

It can fly in event 704, as it was designed for, but not with rudder, or any full size radio gear, with the possible exception of the receiver. It will probably also have to be covered in silk to meet the 2.2 lb limit.

Barry DeCoene of Trillium Balsa flew it in the summer (he has owned Progressive P51's) and was so impressed with its flight characteristics that it was decided that day to press it into production. The result can be seen on page 110 of February's Model Airplane News. I think the price is right at $45, and though scale enough for a scale rally, the building goes very quickly. The plans are CAD drawn , and include drawings for optional scale details and fixed landing gear. The plane is CNC cut and includes hardware and canopy. A conversion kit to turn the plne into the Tempest Mk II (radial engine-same cowl as Sea Fury-a development of the Tempest) is also available.

The Sea Fury is in the works, as is the Typhoon, if I can figure out how to get the Typhoon to balance without adding 2.2 lbs of ballast!

Trillium Balsa is available at 519 688 3522, and I am available through E-Mail at ADani60140@aol.com.
